GEO Satellite Ground Systems DevOps Engineer

SWISSto12 is one of the world’s fastest-growing aerospace companies, evolving from its pioneering use of 3D printing technologies for high-performance Radio Frequency (RF) products and applications to recently announcing the manufacture of entire geostationary telecom satellites, called HummingSat, that define a new category in space.

HummingSat is the world’s first commercial telecom GEO SmallSat developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). Its uniquely compact size combined with highly capable telecom payloads allows telecommunications operators to deploy a cost-efficient, compact and agile asset without sacrificing performance or security. HummingSat has recently been selected by Inmarsat to build three I-8 satellites and in 2022 by Intelsat to build the IS-45 satellite.

SWISSto12 is also a leading provider of Radio-Frequency (RF) products and sub-systems. The company’s patented 3D printing technologies and associated product designs are unique to deliver lightweight, compact, highly performing, and competitive RF products.

SWISSto12 software team is growing, with more and more projects to cover, ranging from flight software development, to internal tools development or other embedded software projects. To support its expansion, the team is looking for a talented devops engineer to deploy and maintain infrastucture and tools that would not only be used by the software team, but also by many other engineers in the company.

One of your first tasks will be to maintain (or even deploy if you join soon enough) software development tools for code hosting, reviews, CI/CD… You will also take care of integrating those with existing systems yourself, or driving external providers for doing so. Other tasks will include working together with the software team to setup a test framework/environment, where your support would be needed to design a system that suits the company needs. You will also implement and maintain the pipelines for those CI/CD testing. In addition, for tools or pieces of software which will require it, you will take part in the software design/architecture definition, setting up and maintaining the infrastucture chosen and deploying the final software on it.

In joint needs with the ground team, you may also be involved in the infrastructure definition and maintenance of spacecraft simulators, for operations engineer to test and optimise procedures, or for software engineers to test flight software updates.

Furthermore, you will work with the ground team to craft, maintain and optimise the infrastructure for space-to-ground communications, ensuring high availability. Your may also write documentation and provide support or advice to our customers to help them implement their own operational solutions.

Over the longer term, you may become responsible for setting up an internal cloud infrastructure, to host services, data, software… to be kept on-premises.

In all those responsabilities, you will ensure data safety and security, duplication when needed, and reduce downtimes as much as possible.

While the technologies used may change over time, we are looking for a candidate with the following experience:

  • micro-service architecture concepts and operations;
  • containers, preferably podman, with knowledge about pods and their benefits;
  • Kubernetes or equivalent;
  • on-premise cloud solutions;
  • CI/CD tools deployment and maintenance, and pipelines writing, maintainance and optimisation;
  • experience with databases, preferably at large scales, SQL or not;
  • experience with automation (Ansible, Puppet, Terraform, …);
  • Linux scripting.

In addition, the following experience/skills would prove valuable:

  • front-end developments with HTML/CSS/Javascript (e.g. Angular);
  • web-based Java application deployment and adaptation;
  • back-end development, ideally on micro-services;
  • REST API, both as a provider and a consumer, and associated tools (e.g. Swagger);
  • experience with VM technologies (e.g. VMWare, ESXi/Xen);
  • IT support (Windows, Active Directory services…).
